About the book:

Purchase

What I liked: What an interesting tale, Bolich writes. Such a great tale that really makes you think, can magic really fail? In the case of the hangman, would he change his mind once he knows the truth of his latest sinner bound to hang on the rope? A short story not to miss! Want to know more, go and purchase it!

Rating: star4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gif

Excerpt:
Scraggy had to turn his head from the luminous glare flaming from the hempen coils. He had never seen his girl shine so bright, all but blinding him with her argent blaze. The rope quivered in his hands, burning brighter and brighter, demanding justice. Awed, Scraggy shook it out, noting how the guards crowded back from its touch, and flung the loop over the crosspiece. The loop fell perfectly in front of Young James' face…

The Pen Review: Eternal Press Reviews

Angel of Windword_200x300_72dpi.jpg

Title: Angel of Windword

Author: Maggie Dove

Length: 83,497 words, 320 Pages

Genre: Historical Romance/Suspense

Rating: star4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gif

What I liked: A beautiful suspenseful story from start to finish. Maggie Dove surely know hows to write tantalizing characters!Nicholas is just simply delicious! A tale of love, mystery, and suspense, not to miss!
Blurb:

Evil forces are at play surrounding Angelique Beauvisage, but she has no clue. Sensuous and suspense-filled, ANGEL OF WINDWORD, begins with a murder that takes place four years before and turns into a perilous cat and mouse game played by two reluctant lovers, who spin a web of deception that only their love can unravel.

Excerpt:

His thunderous expression softened. “Come closer.”
His eyes swept over her face as he caressed her cheek with the knuckle of his forehand. “I did not see her slap you, but your cheeks look burning hot. Answer something for me, Angelique” he ordered gruffly. “Has that woman ever hit you before?”
Angelique drank in the comfort of his nearness. His touch was soft and soothing. “Never,” she lied. “Victoria has never slapped me or hurt me. My lord, it was really my fault...I provoked her.”
He definitely will have his way with me and my place will be in his bed!

Mon Dieu! A guttural sound escaped her lips when she recalled her own words. She was not certain whether she was more distressed at having thrown those awful words at her stepmother or the dreadful possibility that Nicholas had actually overheard them.

Attempting to sound nonchalant, she stammered Victoria’s original question to him, “H-how long had you been standing there, monsieur? Did you...did you hear anything?” she asked in a faint whisper, her voice cracking with embarrassment.
“Hear what, my love?’ he asked innocuously.

“Monsieur, how long had you been standing there?” she repeated with mounting dread. Then gazing at him, she suddenly wished she had not asked. His dark blue eyes sparkled with complete understanding as he stood casually against the doorjamb, strong arms folded across his chest, a devil of a smile beginning to form on his face.

“How long, monsieur…?”
Nicholas did not wait for her to finish. Without another word, he pulled her into his arms and kissed her hard on the lips. Then, just as suddenly, he let go of her, allowing her to fall back against the doorpost.

“Long enough to know I’m going to enjoy those willful ways of yours. Not to mention putting you in that bed of mine.”
Her heart pounding fast against her heaving chest, Angelique watched in stunned silence as Nicholas turned on his heel and made his exit. She could still feel his warm lips against hers as his deep, masculine chuckles echoed in the hallway.

Excerpt:

With a flash of sunlight upon steel, a monster swooped upon her. The branch shuddered as its steel claws folded around the bark, and the branch bowed under the weight of it. She threw herself onto her feet, ready to defend herself, and found herself at a complete loss for any action that might be effective against it. Against such a thing as stood before her… something that drew a blank from the encyclopedic chambers of her mind, a silver monster dredged up from someone’s personal hell, maybe even from her own version of it.

She let out a painful short gasp at the massive steel swords it unfolded into its hands and stood almost frozen to the spot, contemplating it as it contemplated her. The scales upon its chest reflected in its many facets, the fear she betrayed on her face and in her eyes.

Lithe and quick, a single pull of her calves sprung her by her toes into the air as the blades swung to meet. She heard the thud as they embedded themselves into the trunk of the tree and in desperation she grasped at the branch above her. Deftly she pulled herself up and around, onto the branch and sprung along its length. She heard the grinding of metal as it pulled the blades out and turned to follow. She glanced back at it, and it was the pure, shining metal of the blades, caught in the light of the morning, that wrenched at her heart causing it to beat painfully against her chest.

The metal thing behind her was unscratched, not battered like the rest of the junk the ancients had left. Not worn out like the dwindling weaponry kings fought for. This shone as if it had had just been built, or as if someone had lovingly restored to what it once was.

Title: The Horsed Thief: A Virtual Tale of Old Basra

Author: Teel James Glenn

Length: 13,170 words

Genre: Fantasy/Science Fiction

Rating: star4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gif

What I liked:Teel Gleen combines two of my favorite genres together! Fantasy and science fiction all into one. Who can resist love, magic, and of course murder! When all these world combine, it is sure to make an explosive combination. Be sure not to miss it!

Blurb:

In Old Basra the thief Asad El-baha falls in love at first sight with the beautiful Princess Fatinah, but he is the number one priority for murder. In the real world the office is a hotbed of bullying and unrequited love. The two worlds collide when the evil wizard-emir who transforms Asad into a horse, and the game goes horribly wrong…

Excerpt:

The guard nearest chopped at his head with the heavy curved blade of his sword, but Asad deflected the sword blow then darted in and slashed at the man’s arm, forcing him to drop his weapon.
“Ayyah!” the turbaned soldier yelled, “The devil has cut me.”
This stopped the other guards from rushing pell-mell at him, and Asad reversed direction and headed once more into the maze of bushes and for the latticework wall.

His lighter blade would not last long in any prolonged combat, and he had no illusions about his ability. He was a skilled street fighter but the guards of the emir’s palace were handpicked men with real training, not haphazard tricks; his only real chance was to run.
But to where?

The courtyard seemed awash with bodies, but God chose that moment to pass his hand over the moon. The cloud-cast shadows shrouded the yard and clumsied the feet of all but Asad. The very numbers of the guards allowed the scurrying thief a few moments to plan.

“Here!” it was the muffled sound of the woman’s voice cutting across the confusion of male voices. She leaned by a gate hidden near the far corner of the court as if in fear. He moved toward her and noticed she had unlatched the iron gate.

“May God protect you, my lady” he said as he slipped through.

“And he you, lover of songs.” She said. “Fatinah.”

“What?” He whispered.

“My name.”

Then he was through the gate and running, a smile on his face, the image of jade green eyes floating before him.

Why Rita Hates Monkeys by Shelley Dayton

Genre: Mystery, Adventure

Rating: star4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gif

What I liked: What is there not to like about Shelley Dayton's Why Rita Hates Monkeys?! There is comedy to die for, adventure to be sought, and of course tons of intrigue and mystery! A funny story to read and enjoy for everyone.

Summary
Three friends’ vacation from hell staggers through a jungle well seasoned with adventure, intrigue and humor.

When the ladies of Short Mountain Mortgage clock out, chaos clocks in. Why Rita Hates Monkeys follows Vicky, Rita, and Lynette as their vacation in a Mexican rainforest goes horribly wrong. The aggressive bats are frightening and nobody can identify the dinner meat, but the trip becomes a real adventure when a monkey flings a hand at them. Their guide Elsa asks them to find the hand’s owner.

Their options are to help, or a local tribe will have them for dinner. And then later for a midnight snack.

Excerpt

Lynette shrugged. She hadn’t moved. But something else had, way up in the canopy. Something with rotten fruit, a good throwing arm, and lots of like-minded friends.

Suddenly the greenery around us danced and shuddered beneath a solid rain of heavy, stinking fruit. Something foul smacked into the side of my head. The screaming started up once again.

“This way!” screamed Elsa. “We are very close to camp!” We followed her short, pumping legs, pummeled with every step. Something exploded on my chest, splattering liquid on my chin. The monkeys followed us with ease. They hooted and screeched like soccer hooligans.

The covered porch popped into sight. It was Rita this time who tripped and fell, her leg entwined in…well, twine.

“Leave her! We’ll go back for her corpse later! Hahahaha!” screamed Lynette, a far better loser than winner. She sped by me and pounded to a stop on the covered porch. Elsa was there too, hunched over and pinching her side.

Several feet behind us, Rita sat up in a clearing and pulled at the thick vine. A troop of a dozen black-and-white monkeys swarmed to the front of the trees, lobbing with accuracy and enthusiasm. Rita wore a complete cap of rotten, yellow fruit, and her denim shirt was drenched in juice. Her voice was hoarse from screaming.

Grammar Guru - Happy Halloweeen Bloopers!

In the spirit of the holiday, Grammar Guru is bringing you three bloopers with full credit to the contributors!

Does anybody remember the old dictaphone? Yeah, I know, the Guru is dating herself. Well, imagine this mechanical howler courtesy of transcription. Instead of, "Without wishing to create a precedent," we get, "Without wishing to create a president." Thanks, Kate Hofman!

Here's another one from Kate the Great and an automatic translating program:
English: "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
Russian: "The liquor is eager, but the meat is spoiled."
Well, it's Russian. You know vodka had to get into it somewhere.

And finally this classic blooper from Rebecca Vickery, Southern cook extraordinaire, and her SpellCheck program."
When Rebecca wrote, "red-eye gravy," SpellCheck corrected it to "overnight flight gravy."

That's it for the mischief. Now Guru is heading out to the pasture, where someone thought it was funny to take the gate off its hinges and leave it leaning sideways into the pasture. The horse is giving it meaningful looks. After all, the grass is always greener...

Happy Halloween, everyone! Feel free to leave your own bloopers in the comments section and I'll share them in a future post. If you want to be entered in for a drawing for one of our book giveaways, leave your email addy, too!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! The Pen & Muse wishes you a safe trick or treating and lots of scary fun!

Rating:star4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gifstar4a.gif

What I liked: Beth Trissel is one of my favorite authors. How perchance did I get to read her work? It was through a contest and ever since then I knew that she was something special. Through the Fire is no exception! This lovely tale will embark any reader on a journey to when differences of culture divided us and a time when America was the place of expansion and dreams. From the plot to the characters, everything was well written. I felt that I was on the journey with Rebecca and her sister as they try to reach their uncle on the treacherous journey across the mountains. What will happen next? You will just have to read the book!

Grammar Guru

OK, nobody asked for this one. It's all my own idea, inspired by seeing the misuse of lose/loose just one too many times on a rainy day...you know, the kind of day when small things grate on you because there's nothing else to do! Dangerous stuff for us editor-types. (Yes, I know it is an incomplete sentence.)

Assuming the author in question didn't have a typo problem--in which case I send condolences, because I have one and it's a doozie--here are some definitions of lose and loose:

Lose: to misplace or bring to destruction, miss from one's possession or suffer deprivation. To suffer a loss. To fail to keep control. To fail to use. To fail to win, gain or obtain. To fail to catch with the senses of the mind. To miss one's way or bearings. To make oneself withdrawn from reality. To go astray. To draw away from or fail to keep in sight or in mind.

Wow! Who knew? But in sum total, "lose" is about loss. Lose=loss.

Loose: To work partly free. Not rigidly fastened or attached. To free from confinement. Not tight-fitting. Not brought together in a bundle. Not tightly drawn. Having a flexible and relaxed character.

Not one definition under "loose" has anything to do with loss. Loose=free.

So if you are worried that your heroine might "loose" the hero if she does such-and-such, remember that lose equals loss. You don't have to "loose" him unless you have him tied up.

What I liked: A very intricate and interesting tale about a time long ago. Chaucer definitely did his homework and it shows. The characters and the emotions just like they would have felt them in that era. It's like getting into the Forbidden City with a dark twist!
